Adoption

Every Child Deserves A Loving Home

Are you raising a child without legal recognition as a parent?  Do you worry that an uninvolved biological parent will suddenly remove the child or assert their parenting rights?  Adoption is one way to secure the rights and responsibilities of a parental relationship.  Adoption provides children with the emotional stability of a secure, legally protected relationship to their primary caregivers and provides them with financial security in the form of inheritance rights and insurance coverage.

In Colorado, the most common type of family-based adoption are stepparent and kinship adoptions.  Stepparent adoption is allowed when one spouse is the child’s biological or adoptive parent and wants their wife or husband to be legally recognized as the other parent of their child.  Similarly, grandparents who are raising their grandchildren may apply for a kinship adoption.  Kinship adoption is also available to aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, and first cousins who have been taking physical care of a child for more than one year.  As a general matter, family-based adoptions require that you to show either parental consent, abandonment for more than one year, failure to provide financial support or death of a parent.

If you are considering stepparent, second parent, kinship or custodial adoption, FairPoint Mediation and Law can help you create a more secure and permanent relationship with the child in your care.
